TOKYO

Tokyo is Japan's capital and one of the world's most important cities. Vast, modern and energetic, it combines towering skyscrapers, shopping districts and cutting-edge technology with temples, shrines and traditional neighbourhoods.
The Tokyo Metropolis is home to around 14 million people, making it one of Japan's most densely populated urban areas. Many people also commute daily from neighbouring cities to work or study in the capital.
Japan is a constitutional parliamentary monarchy. The emperor's role is primarily symbolic, while the government is led by a prime minister. Tokyo also has its own Metropolitan Government, headed by a governor.
Some of the city's best-known areas and landmarks include Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Ginza, Odaiba and Meiji Shrine. Tokyo also boasts one of the world's most extensive metro and railway networks, essential for getting around such a vast city.
One of Tokyo's most famous sights is Shibuya Crossing, where hundreds of people cross in every direction at once. The sheer number of vending machines on the city's streets is another surprising feature, offering drinks, food and a wide range of everyday items.

KYOTO

Kyoto is one of Japan's most important cities for discovering its history and traditional culture. It served as the country's capital for more than a thousand years and preserves a wealth of temples, shrines, gardens and historic districts. With around 1.45 million inhabitants, Kyoto is a large city, yet its atmosphere differs considerably from Tokyo's. Many areas retain a more traditional and peaceful character.
The city is administered by a mayor and municipal government and plays a major cultural and tourism role in Japan. It is also home to universities, shops and a thriving tourism sector.
Famous sights include the Golden Pavilion, Fushimi Inari Shrine, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and the Gion district. Kyoto is also renowned for its gardens, tea ceremonies and traditional cuisine.
One of its most remarkable sights is Fushimi Inari, with thousands of red torii gates forming long pathways up the mountain. The Golden Pavilion is another highlight, with parts of its exterior covered in gold leaf.
Gion is also associated with the traditions of geisha and maiko, making it one of the best-known places to discover a more traditional side of Japanese culture.

KAMAKURA

Kamakura is a coastal city near Tokyo. Smaller and quieter than the capital, it is best known for its history, temples and connections with the samurai.
With approximately 173,000 inhabitants, it offers a much more relaxed atmosphere than Tokyo. Despite its size, it attracts many visitors thanks to its historic monuments and proximity to the capital.
Located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Kamakura has its own mayor and municipal government. Like the rest of Japan, it forms part of a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government.
Its best-known landmark is the Great Buddha of Kamakura. Other highlights include Hase-dera Temple and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Its seaside location also means the city has beaches and coastal areas.
A fascinating detail is that visitors can enter the Great Buddha statue. Kamakura was also one of Japan's most important political centres for centuries, particularly during the age of the samurai.

HAKODATE

This city can be explored through the optional Spanish-language excursions offered by Mundomar Cruceros

Historically, Hakodate was one of the first Japanese ports to open to international trade. This heritage can still be seen in some of its Western-style buildings and neighbourhoods.
Highlights include Mount Hakodate, which offers panoramic city views; the morning market; the historic Motomachi district; and Goryokaku Fort. The city is also well known for its fresh fish and seafood.
One of its most distinctive features is Goryokaku's star-shaped design, unusual in Japan. The night views from Mount Hakodate are among the city's most famous sights.
Hakodate also stands out for its blend of Japanese and Western influences, visible in religious buildings and former merchants' houses.

NIIGATA

This city can be explored through the optional Spanish-language excursions offered by Mundomar Cruceros
Niigata developed as an important trading port on the coast of the Sea of Japan. In 1858, it was designated as one of the ports Japan would open to international trade, and it began operating as such in 1869. Located on Honshu Island, it lies near the mouth of the Shinano River, Japan's longest river. Its surroundings combine extensive rice fields, mountains, beaches and coastal scenery.
The region is famous for its high-quality rice, a staple of Japanese cuisine. It is also renowned for sake production, supported by pure water, locally grown rice and a long brewing tradition.
Niigata has a strong regional identity linked to agriculture, fishing and traditional celebrations. One of its best-known events is the Niigata Festival, which fills the city with parades, dancing and fireworks in summer.
Niigata Prefecture is known for heavy winter snowfall and ski resorts. From the city, visitors can also travel to Sado Island, famous for its historic gold mines, coastal landscapes and distinctive cultural heritage.

Busan

This city can be explored through the optional Spanish-language excursions offered by Mundomar Cruceros
Busan is a major city on South Korea's southeastern coast and the only port of call on this itinerary outside Japan. A modern city closely connected to the sea, it combines high-rise buildings, beaches, traditional markets and shopping districts.

South Korea is a presidential republic, and Busan has its own mayor and local government. Its port is one of Asia's most important, supporting extensive commercial and maritime activity.
The city is also known for its beaches, especially Haeundae, and its seafood markets. Popular sights include Haeundae Beach, Jagalchi Market and Gamcheon Culture Village, a hillside neighbourhood filled with colourful houses.

Sasebo grew in importance in the late 19th century with the establishment of a naval base, which strongly influenced its development and identity. Its history is also linked to international exchanges, particularly with the United States, whose influence can still be seen in aspects of local life and cuisine.
The city is known for the Kujukushima archipelago, a group of numerous islands and islets forming one of the region's most distinctive coastal landscapes. The area also has a renowned ceramics tradition and a distinctive local food scene, including the famous Sasebo burger.

HISTORY

Japan has a fascinating history spanning thousands of years. The earliest settlements are believed to date back to the Jomon period (around 14,000 BC), when hunter-gatherers began forming communities. The Yamato period (250–710 AD) consolidated imperial power and brought cultural influences from China and Korea. From the 12th to the 19th centuries, shoguns — military leaders who ruled in the emperor's name — held power.
During the Edo period (1603–1868), Japan experienced a long period of isolation. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the country modernised rapidly. After the devastation of the Second World War, Japan developed into a global economic power, renowned for its technology and culture.

FOOD

Japanese cuisine is known for its emphasis on freshness and presentation. Sushi, made with rice and raw fish, is one of its most iconic dishes, while sashimi consists of thinly sliced raw fish served without rice. Ramen, a noodle soup, is popular throughout the country and varies by region. Other favourites include tempura — battered and fried seafood and vegetables — and okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake.
Rice is a staple, while miso is an essential ingredient in soups and sauces. Japanese cuisine places great importance on respecting ingredients and seasonality.

WEATHER

Japan has a varied climate, with cold winters in the north and warm summers in the south. The seasons are distinct, bringing beautiful spring and autumn scenery. Spring, with its cherry blossoms, and autumn, with its colourful leaves, are particularly popular times to visit. Pack suitable clothing and check the forecast, as conditions can vary by region.

CURRENCY

Japan's official currency is the Japanese yen (JPY). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist establishments, but carrying some cash is advisable, as many small restaurants, shops and markets do not accept cards. Foreign cards may not work at every ATM, so withdrawing money at banks or convenience stores such as 7-Eleven can be useful.
